The spiral-shaped teeth regulate the distribution of friction within the LSD. When torque is applied to the spiral-shaped gear system, it creates a force that pushes the gear into the differential housing, resulting in friction. Increasing torque increases the thrust that is directly transmitted with the amount of torque. This allows the Blackline LSD to handle significant imbalance in traction, even under heavy power conditions, as would be the case when exiting an engaged corner. But at low torque, the LSD can differentiate smoothly and quietly, making the differential very suitable for normal driving on the road. The Blackline LSD uses the popular parallel-axis spiral gear configuration that has been optimized for uniform load distribution. They are designed with a torque bias of 5:1, meaning that if one wheel loses grip, the wheel with the most grip can receive five times as much torque as the wheel that slips. However, five times zero is still zero, so all these spiral-shaped LSDs work best when both wheels are \u2018aligned\u2019 and there is still some traction available on the slipping wheel. In practice, this is rarely a problem, because there is always some \u2018resistance\u2019 on the slipping wheel, but some drivers skillfully use the left foot brake to partially lock the rotating wheel.
